Imprisoned by the Soviets. Orphaned by the Holocaust. Crowned peacemaker by the Nobel Prize Committee. Haunted by the Lebanon War.

Menachem Begin was a pillar of the State of Israel and a tireless fighter for the Jewish people.

He was also a controversial leader. Whether challenging the British, founding the Likud political party, or fighting to end bigotry against the Middle Eastern and African Jews within Israeli society, he was endlessly dedicated to his country and his people. That, however, was not without consequence. Begin's part in the tragic Altalena Affair and at Deir Yassin were with him to the day he died. As Prime Minister of Israel, he made a historic peace deal with Egypt and also gave the go-ahead to bomb Saddam Hussein’s Osirik nuclear reactor. His life provides a nuanced and complicated canvas from which to illustrate parts of Israeli history in the context of its relationship to its neighbors.

With evocative imagery, rarely seen archival materials, and intimate interviews with Israelis and American diplomats, the Menachem Begin documentary will portray this brilliant, tough, complex, loving, and proud man who never compromised when he felt that the survival of Israel and the Jewish people were at stake.
